about bridges | over bruggen

At the Oosterbrug (the Eastern bridge) in the city of Groningen, near the Werkman Monument (by Armando) a quite unusual artwork literally pops up from time to time: a sound poem of separate letter types hanging from steel cables underneath the bridge. This happens, when the bridge slowly opens: a clot of letter types appears, of which the people waiting for the bridge see how it gradually dissolves into a text. It is difficult to grasp the meaning of this text (by Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman), yet it never ceases to surprise. The poem continues on the quay wall all the way down into the water. The bridge as well as the text are unfolded: one clearly does read something, but what does it exactly mean? Language is about ‘building bridges’, which is also the title of this work. The fact that Werkman originally titled his text ‘Gestadige beweging’ (‘Steady movement’) has in this case certainly made this art work all the more special.
