(taken away) | (weggehaald)

Materiaal: afwezige baksteen.

The Groningen CBK* – aiming to draw attention to and commemorate the history of the Folkingestraat – the heart of the wiped out Jewish quarter in the city of Groningen (the Netherlands) – challenged a number of artists to come up with an artistic concept to visualise this dramatic historical event on-site in the current Folkingestraat.

“Weggehaald (taken away)”, that’s what people said after the war about the Jewish residents of this district. An understatement obviously! My objective here is not to pass judgement, but merely to document. My contribution consisted of milling the word ‘weggehaald’ (Dutch for ‘taken away’) out of a side wall of one of the buildings in this street. Inconspicuous, in the margin. This void explains itself. And will hopefully give cause for reflection as well as be an appeal to never forget. Material: missing brick.
